Water Pollution

What is Water Pollution?
Water pollution is the accumulation of impurities into the water bodies. With this accumulation the water bodies (ponds, lakes, rivers, underground water and oceans) get contaminated affecting life forms – from plants to living organisms – damaging not just individual species and population but also biological communities.
Why does Water Pollution Occur?
The water pollution occurs when untreated pollutants flow into the water bodies, directly or indirectly. The major cause of water pollution is the Human race. However natural causes include volcanoes, algae blooms, storms and earthquakes.
Effects of Water Pollution?
Water pollution is the leading cause of illness, disease and death.
Types of Water Pollution:
Primarily there are two types of water pollutions:
a) Direct b) Indirect
Direct
In this process it is seen that pollutants enter the water body through conveyance i.e. pipes or ditches. Best examples are discharges from factories, storm drains, municipal sewers and even treatment plants.
Indirect
Herein contamination does not occur from any single direct source but from often from the cumulative result of pollution from a large area with small amount of contaminants. They generally are found to seep into the underground. A typical example are the leaching out of nitrogen compounds from fertilizers used on agricultural land.
